On September 20, 2002, the innovation fund project of the State Ministry of Science and Technology which our company undertakes, “The development of metal hydride devices for the purification, storage and transportation of hydrogen”, smoothly passed the acceptance checking with high score. It is indicated in the conclusion of acceptance checking that " the product of this project is of good performance, high dependability, low operating costs, this product has solved the problem of hydrogen storage and transportation on a large scale, filled the domestic gap with the great innovation and break-through in technology, has been widely used in the field of hydrogen storage with remarkable society and economic benefits. " The success of the project is based on the technology of small-scale hydrogen storage and purifying devices (hydrogen storage containers). The small-scale hydrogen storage containers are suitable for the hydrogen source of open-air analysis, hydrogen atom clocks, testing instruments such as gaseous phase chromatographs, and fuel cells. The containers also can be used in these aspects such as the production of semiconductors for integrated circuits, refrigerators and powder metallurgy, in which the product of our company has already been applied in enormous quantities at present. This product can absorb and desorb hydrogen at the room temperature and relatively low pressure, and more than 90% of the hydrogen stored in it can be released at steady pressure with steady hydrogen gas current. The typical value of the product is, 2wt.% as hydrogen storage density per unit weight, and 30kgH2/m3 as hydrogen storage density per unit volume. With the use of the product, the ordinary hydrogen can be purified into the ultra high pure hydrogen of 6N purity, which shows the technology of the product reaches the international advanced level. The application of the metal hydride devices for the purification, storage and transportation of hydrogen makes it realized for the hydrogen storage and transportation in solid state, largely reduces the pressure of the hydrogen storage and transportation, improves the density of the hydrogen storage and transportation to that of liquid hydrogen, and greatly improves the security of the hydrogen storage and transportation because the desorbing speed of hydrogen is controlled by the desorbing temperature. In the product, both the function of hydrogen recovery & purifying and the function of hydrogen storage and transportation are united together in the same device, we can use either any single function or multi-functions. The application prospect of the product is very well because of the easy and simple handling, the short procedure, the high efficiency, and the good stability.
